Dhanyamla Dhara is a special kind of Ayurvedic massage therapy in which warm herbal liquid is poured from a hung vessel over the affected parts of the body. During this treatment, a mixture is prepared from cereals (Dhanya) and vinegar (Amla) obtained from citrus fruits. Horse gram, sliced fruits, Navara rice and millets are blended in pieces of linen and then immersed in a large water pot. The water is then boiled for a specific duration during which the extracts from the mixture leach in the pot to form vinegar. The therapy using this liquid is known as Dhanyamla Dhara in the world of Ayurveda. It is continued for about 45 to 60 minutes and lasts for 7 to 12 days.
Before starting this therapy, patient is made to sit on the droni, talam is kept on his head and then the therapy is performed. Gauze is tied around the patient’s head and his body is covered with a thin cloth below the neck. On completion, the therapists clean the body, remove gauze, apply rasnadi choorna to the head and recommend rest for about an hour.
