Panchakarma

Panchakarma, basically known as five actions or five treatment of rejuvenation therapy, is widely practiced in different Ayurvedic hospitals. The therapy is used in order to clean and rejuvenate the body, mind and soul of the individual. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing. Panchakarma is regarded as Ayurveda’s primary purification as well as detoxification treatment that are used in order to alleviate various diseases.

Panchakarma introduced by Aacharya Charak, who is the author of the most important ancient internal medicine, has explained that this therapy is best to be practiced to lessen all the major diseases. Panchakarma is added with three parts that include

POORVA KARMA

Before the actual operation of the purification and detoxification begins, preparatory methods are taken into consideration that is Poorva karma. Under this therapy, the body is encouraged by perfect massage to let go of the toxins. The two procedures namely snehan and swedan is applied.

Here, snehan is the oil massage, which is applied to the entire body that helps the toxins to run towards the gastro-intestinal tract. The massage also makes the tissues soft and supple and allows you to gain alleviation from ailments. Snehan is practiced daily for a week. After snehan, swedan is immediately followed, where herbal concoction is added to further loosen the toxins.

PRADHAN KARMA

Vaman: therapeutic vomiting or emesis

Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy which removes Kapha toxins collected in the body and the respiratory tract.  When there is congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of bronchitis, colds, cough or asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting, vaman, to eliminate the kapha causing the excess mucus. Once the mucus is released the patient will feel instantly relieved. It is likely that congestion, wheezing and breathlessness will disappear and that the sinuses will become clear. Therapeutic vomiting is also indicated in chronic asthma, diabetes, chronic cold, lymphatic congestion, chronic indigestion and edema.

Virechan: Purgation Therapy

Virechana is medicated purgation therapy which removes Pitta toxins from the body. When excess bile, pitta, is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and small intestine, it tends to result in rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic attacks of fever, biliary vomiting, nausea and jaundice. Ayurvedic literature suggests in these conditions the administration of therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative. Virechan is facilitated with senna leaves, flax seeds, psyllium husks or triphala in a combination that is appropriate for the individual person. It is a safe procedure without side effects. Nasya: Nasal Administration

The nose is the doorway to the brain and it is also the doorway to consciousness. The nasal administration of medication is called nasya. An excess of bodily humors accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head areas is eliminated by means of the nearest possible opening, the nose.

Prana, life force as nerve energy, enters the body through the breath taken in through the nose. Prana is in the brain and maintains sensory and motor functions. Prana also governs mental activities, memory, concentration and intellectual activities. Deranged prana creates defective functioning of all these activities and produces headaches, convulsions, loss of memory and reduced sensory perception. Thus nasal administration, nasya is indicated for prana disorders, sinus congestion, migraine headaches, convulsions and certain eye and ear problems.

Anuvasana vasti

Vasti plays a key role and it ensures relaxation to rheumatic complaints mainly. Anuvasana means to stay. In Anuvasana Basti, the administered medicines stay for a longer duration inside the body but do not causes any untoward problems. They neither aggravate the dosas nor cause any complications. Here medicated oils or ghee is used as the main liquid medicine according to the condition. The oil enema will moisturize and rejuvenate your entire system. They can also be administered on a daily basis. It has an amazing power to control and eliminate musculo-skeletal disorders like Arthritis, Sciatica, Spondylosis etc and other Neurological Disorders, Constipation etc.

Asthapana vasti

Asthapana Vasti means enema using medicated decoction. Asthapana Vasti establishes life span and age hence its name. Establishing age means enhancing the age, by enhancing the lifespan of each cell in the body. By expelling the morbidity, vasti establishes health and immunity in the body. All the functions of the body will be carried out in a smooth way. Neurological ailments such as Paralysis are best managed with Kashaya Vasti. It is used in the treatment of pain conditions such as low back ache, gout, rheumatism etc. Decoction based enema helps in colonic de-toxification. Gastric problems such as flatulence and constipation can be effectively treated using this. It also acts like an aphrodisiac for those suffering from depletion of semen. It has both brmhana and langhana effect according to the medicines used. Asthapana Vasti enhances longevity and establishes youthfulness.

Rakta moksha: detoxification of the blood

Raktamokshana is procedure to cleanse the blood and is advised only in very rare conditions.  Toxins present in the gastro-intestinal tract are absorbed into the blood and circulated throughout the body. This condition is called toxemia, which is the basic cause of repeated infections, hypertension and certain other circulatory conditions. This includes repeated attacks of skin disorders such as urticaria, rashes, herpes, eczema, acne, leukoderma, chronic itching or hives. In such conditions, along with internal medication, elimination of the toxins and purification of the blood is necessary. Raktamoksha is also indicated for cases of enlarged liver, spleen and gout.

Extracting a small amount of blood from a vein relieves the tension created by the pittagenic toxins in the blood. Bloodletting also stimulates the spleen to produce antitoxic substances which helps to stimulate the immune system. Toxins are neutralized enabling radical cures in many blood born disorders.
