MANAGING DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS THROUGH AYURVEDA

Shalidhanan, a 51-year-old female patient, was admitted to Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home from May 24th to June 16th, 2024, to receive treatment for her Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), which resulted in Pulmonary Embolism. Upon admission, she presented with symptoms of tightness and swelling in both legs, making it difficult for her to walk more than a few steps. She also experienced tingling sensations and stiffness in her leg and neck nerves. Furthermore, she had developed ascites, causing her stomach and legs to swell. Additionally, she suffered from sleep disturbances, a constant cough, and a reduced appetite. She found it challenging to tolerate fans and air conditioning due to the swelling and numbness in her legs. The lower part of her limb had become discoloured due to poor blood circulation. After receiving internal medicines and undergoing panchakarma treatment under the guidance of Dr. Sanand, significant improvements were observed in her leg and overall body within just one week. By the end of the 24-day treatment, her leg swelling and water retention were completely cured. Additionally, stomach bloating subsided, and the nerve stiffness in her legs and neck improved. As per the doctor’s advice, the dose of allopathic medicines was gradually reduced. She can now sleep peacefully even with a fan at full speed, and her legs have regained their strength while the discoloration has notably decreased. Feeling more active and energetic, she has resumed her daily routine and office work. Once her bilirubin and hemoglobin levels are normal, she plans to seek treatment at the center again.

What is DVT?

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins, usually in the legs. DVT can cause leg pain or swelling, and in some cases, there may be no noticeable symptoms. If a blood clot develops in a leg vein, it may result in pain, warmth, and tenderness in the affected area. Deep vein thrombosis can occur due to certain medical conditions affecting blood clotting, or when a person remains immobile for extended periods, such as during long-distance travel or while on bed rest following surgery, illness, or an accident.

In DVT, blood clots in the veins break loose and travel through the bloodstream, lodged in the lungs and obstruct blood flow, leading to a pulmonary embolism. Deep vein thrombosis is primarily caused by vein damage resulting from surgery, inflammation, infection, or injury.

Remember the following tips to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT):

  • Avoid crossing your legs while sitting to prevent blocking blood flow.
  • During travel, take regular breaks to stretch your legs
  • If traveling by plane, make sure to stand or walk around occasionally.
  • While driving, take a break every hour to walk around and stretch your legs.
  • Perform lower leg exercises such as raising and lowering your heels by keeping your toes on the floor, and raising your feet by keeping them on the floor.
  • Stop smoking which increases the DVT.
  • Weight management is important as obesity is a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis.Daily exercise can reduce the risk of blood clots.
  • Tips for increasing activity include trying to move as fast as you can.

Patient review

Dr. Sanand initially started the treatment as per my old reports. I am really grateful to the Doctor that he started the actual line of treatment only after I undertook various medical tests at the centre. I could notice considerable change in my leg and overall body within a week of my treatment. By end of my 24 days treatment, my leg swelling and water retention completely got cured. There was no more stomach bloating. My allopathy medicines were reduced. The nerve stiffness of the legs and neck got cured. There is no more sleep disturbance, now I sleep undisturbed with fan in full swing. The legs are retaining its vigour and the darkness has reduced considerably. Dr. Sanand informed me that they have a traditional line of treatment for DVT which is SIRAVEDAM which could not be done for me as my hemoglobin was low and bilirubin was high when I was admitted. Now I am back to my daily routine and office work feeling more active and energetic. I will be again availing of the treatment in the centre once my bilirubin and hemoglobin levels are normal.

Overall my stay in the centre was worth the effort, time and money all put together because Dr. Sanand treats every patient as a family and takes good care of their comfort and gives the best possible treatment. My sincere and heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sanand. The entire staff of the Ayurvedic hospital was so caring and friendly. I never felt I was alone during the course of treatment. My special mention to Habita Maam, Dr. Gayatri, Dr. Harshita, Dr. Joseph, Shiny, Reshmi, the treatment staff and Rama, Anita for taking great care of me and my needs. I would highly recommend Sree Subramania Ayurvedic Nursing Home for all those who are suffering from various ailments as also for wellness treatment.”
