Post surgery complications

Common Complications of Spinal Surgery are:

  • Blood clots or bleeding
  • Paralysis
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nerve root injury
  • Infections
  • Cauda equina syndrome
  • Chance of recurrence

Following a lumbar discectomy, a surgical technique used to alleviate spinal nerve pressure by removing a section of a herniated disc in the lower back, patients may experience issues such as leg weakness and an elevated risk of falling. This weakening of the lower extremities may lead to difficulties in walking, standing or maintaining balance, facing challenges in daily activities and potentially causing an impact on overall quality of life.

Ayurvedic treatment focuses on minimizing nerve root compression, strengthening spinal muscles and vertebrae, and reversing bone spur formation by pacifying vata (the dosha that causes locomotory system illnesses). Paralysis, Different types of pain like back pain, neck pain, leg pain etc. are classified as ‘vatavyadhi’ and are treated very effectively in Ayurveda.

Treatment often differs according to the problem. Internal medication are employed to regulate the tridosha, treat tissue damage (asthi/bones, mamsa/muscles, majja/bone marrow), and strengthen the vertebrae and supporting muscles. Depending on the condition, procedures such as rukshana (e.g., podikizhi, dhanyamla dhara), snehana (abhyanga), swedana (e.g., pizhichil), virechana (with suitable oil), nasya (nasal instillation of medicine), vasthi (enema with suitable drugs), bandage, lepana (external application of powdered medicines), pichu (applying cloth soaked in medicines over the affected part), and so on can be provided.

Choorna pinda sweda mode of action

Churna pinda sweda, also known as Podi kizhi, is a specialized therapy used for diseases of the bones, joints, muscles, and nerves that cause swelling, inflammation, and stiffness. Churna/podi refers to a course or fine powder made of medicinal herbs, Pinda is a bolus and sweda means fermentation. Swedana karma, also known as sudation therapy, is administered by using a bolus that is prepared by combining various medicinal herb powders.

When the process begins, vasodilatation occurs throughout the body because of the medication’s pharmacological activity and the elevated body temperature. Vasodilatation causes an increase in blood flow across the affected area, facilitating the removal of toxins and the supply of nutrients and oxygen. The active components of medicinal herbs can relax muscles and lessen stiffness, pain, and inflammation.

The increased blood supply causes the metabolism to speed up, which helps to nourish the skin by removing free radicals from the skin cells which are the source of disease. The thermal stimulus may influence pain perception, reduce tension and promote sound sleep. Additionally because  of the increased blood supply, maintains the ideal conditions for muscle contraction, which causes muscles to relax and boosts the efficiency of muscular action.

Lepa mode of action

“Lepam” is the term used locally to describe herbal paste. The medicinal herbs are finely ground and mixed with a medium of water, herbal oil, milk, rice washing water, Dhanyamla etc. The paste is then applied to the affected area. Lepam absorbs swelling and decreases inflammation from the affected area transdermally. It is very helpful against arthritis with swelling and pain. The herbs in Lepam promote blood circulation and tissue nourishing, resulting in improved general health.pain and inflammation will be relieved after this procedure. The lepam acts as an analgesic and also helps to reduce inflammation.
