Guttate psoriasis treatment

The psoriasis that appears to be like red dots over the affected areas is basically guttate. It is merely like a shower of red rain. The body looks painted with red polka dots. In the initial state, guttate psoriasis is associated with strep throat.

What is strep throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes a severe sore throat, fever, and swollen glands. It is caused specifically by the Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria. In some people, this can trigger an immune system response, which may lead to a condition like guttate psoriasis.

In Ayurveda, strep throat is seen as a vitiation of the pitta and kapha doshas, often involving the accumulation of ama, or toxins. This imbalance occurs when the body’s immunity (Vyadhikshamatva) is disturbed. This compromised immunity can then manifest in conditions like guttate psoriasis.

What are the causes for guttate psoriasis?

The root cause is severely impaired digestion (Mandagni), which leads to the creation of toxins. When these toxins mix with an intensely aggravated pitta dosha (governing heat, metabolism, and inflammation) and Vata dosha, this combination manifests as disease.

Disrupted digestion leads to physical problems like imbalances in heat, acidity, metabolism, and inflammation, ultimately disturbing the Vata dosha. This process causes toxins to accumulate in the body, resulting in changes that can also affect the skin. It’s important to note that this sequence varies from person to person. The final manifestation of these internal reactions is the appearance of red, scaly skin patches characteristic of psoriasis.

The key factors leading to guttate psoriasis are the consumption of mismatched food combinations, excessive intake of hot, spicy, sour, or fermented foods, an unhealthy lifestyle, stress, suppressed emotions, and digestive issues.

What is the cure in Ayurveda for Guttate Psoriasis?

In Ayurveda, Guttate Psoriasis is known as Kitibha Kushta and is initially classified as a minor skin disease. The Ayurvedic approach aims for deep detoxification and balancing the doshas, rather than just suppressing skin symptoms. Below is an overview of the core treatment principles from an Ayurvedic perspective for managing this condition.

  • Shodana Chikitsa

These are purification therapies, such as Vamana and Virechana, which are focused on removing toxins from the body. These treatments clear the body’s channels to allow for better efficacy of medicine and symptom relief. The process heals the body from the inside out.

  • Shamana Chikitsa

These are palliative therapies, involving both internal and external treatments, that work to reduce inflammation, itching, and scaling; purify the blood; and promote skin healing and normal texture. This approach focuses on the overall well-being of the individual.

Internal therapies include Panchatikta Ghrita (medicated ghee), Gandhak Rasayan, Khadirarishta, and herbs like Neem and Turmeric. External therapies include oils like Marichyadi Taila and Vetapalai Oil, as well as creams like Atrisor and aloe vera gel.
